Network Monitoring
and Measurements

Measuring the Internet to understand, model and secure it.

Traffic is a research group working in computer networks and multimedia, focused on Network Monitoring and Measurements. We measure experimental and operational networks to derive knowledge and models of their behaviour, with a specific focus on network management and security.

MIRAGE-2019: human-generated mobile traffic with ground truth

A dataset for mobile app traffic analysis covering 40 Android apps (e.g. Facebook, Spotify, Twitter) across 16 Google Play categories, collected by more than 280 experimenters between May 2017 and May 2019. Released openly to the Internet community.

Best Paper Award — 4th IEEE International Conference on Computing, Communications and Security (ICCCS 2019), Rome, October 2019.

About the group

Traffic — and this is the main motivation behind its name — focuses on monitoring Internet traffic to provide input for developing new algorithms, protocols and systems for the current and future Internet.

Besides teaching, the group is involved in several national and international research projects. Formed in 2003, it has a significant track record in funding and publications at venues such as SIGCOMM, CoNEXT and IMC, and in journals such as IEEE JSAC, IEEE Network and IEEE Communications Magazine.

We are part of the larger Computer Networks group (COMICS) at the University of Napoli Federico II.
