Path tracing and topology
Making traceroute and topology discovery more reliable: third-party addresses, alias resolution with PYTHIA, and forwarding detours.
Tools & projects
- Third-Party Addresses
An accurate knowledge of the Internet topology is essential for a deep understanding of such a complex and ever-evolving system. In the last decade many attempts have been done to overcome the incompleteness of BGP-derived AS-level topologies using traceroute.
- TP-Traceroute
TP-Traceroute tool is an enhanced traceroute version which applies the Third-Party address detection technique. TP-Traceroute is able to identify third-party addresses on traceroute trace.
- PYTHIA
Pythia is an active probing technique for alias resolution purposely designed to recontruct any-interface stamping routers. An accurate and exhaustive knowledge of the Internet topology is essential for a deep understanding of such a complex and ever-evolving ecosystem.
